Lola Oluwa-Okougbo is a board-certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) with a strong commitment to delivering compassionate, evidence-based mental health care. With a background in both nursing and advanced psychiatric practice, Lola specializes in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide range of mental health conditions across the lifespan, including depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and schizophrenia.
She began her nursing career after earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Bethel University, followed by several years of hands-on experience in acute psychiatric units, community mental health settings, and crisis intervention services. Motivated by a desire to expand clinical expertise and serve patients more holistically, Lola pursued a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a specialization in psychiatric-mental health from Walden University.
As a nurse practitioner, Lola is licensed to perform comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, prescribe and manage medications, and implement psychotherapeutic interventions. Her approach integrates both medical and psychological strategies, emphasizing patient-centered care and shared decision-making.
Lola believes that the best way to provide high-quality patient care is to acknowledge and respect each patient’s individuality. Care should be patient-focused with the patient at the center of decision-making. Health, wellness and illness should be viewed through the lens of the patient as a whole. Patient care should be holistic and compassionate with an emphasis on educating the patient while building a strong therapeutic relationship built on both trust and best evidenced-based practice.
Coming from a different cultural background was an eye-opening, and maybe at times a difficult experience. However, because of that experience she can relate more easily to patients of different cultures and backgrounds.
In addition to clinical practice, Lola is passionate about mental health advocacy, stigma reduction, and improving access to psychiatric care. She regularly participates in continuing education and remains active in professional organizations such as the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA).
Outside of work, Lola enjoys being with family and enjoys traveling, which helps maintain balance and resilience in a demanding field.
