Lola Oluwa-Okougbo is a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner. Since beginning her psychiatric nursing career in 2015, she has gained extensive experience helping patients manage a wide range of conditions across diverse settings.
My professional background includes working as a registered nurse in various settings. After over 10 years of nursing practice, I chose to pursue a career as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMNHP). In such a role, I can be more involved in the care of patients in the community. I can now further support my patients, and as a part of the care team, I can help deliver more personalized and holistic care to each patient.
I believe that the best way to provide high-quality patient care is to acknowledge and respect each patient’s individuality. Care should be patient-focused, with the patient at the center of decision-making. Health, wellness, and illness should be viewed through the lens of the patient as a whole. Patient care should be holistic and compassionate, with an emphasis on educating the patient while building a strong therapeutic relationship built on both trust and best evidence-based practice.
Coming from a different cultural background was an eye-opening and maybe at times a difficult experience. However, because of that experience, I can relate more easily to patients of different cultures and backgrounds.
I love to be around family and friends and travel to different places around the globe.
